How a lockout is approached
Identify the vehicle. Unlock tools and air wedges are not one-size. A weatherstrip that will take a tool on a 2008 pickup will not behave the same on a tight modern sedan.
Confirm it is your vehicle.
Open through the door with the least risk to glass, paint, and wiring. Test the interior lock once it is open.
Running vehicles and kids in the car
If a child or pet is locked inside, say that immediately when you call. That changes priority.
If the vehicle is running, say that too. Exhaust, temperature, and whether it is in gear all matter.
What we will not do
We will not slim-jim a vehicle in a way that is likely to wreck the linkage just to be fast. We will not force a latch that should be decoded or opened another way. And we will not open a car for someone who cannot show it is theirs.
Questions people actually ask
Will unlocking the car damage the door?
The intent is no. Any lockout tool can mark a weatherstrip if it is used carelessly. We use the method that fits the vehicle. If the only remaining option is destructive, that is a conversation before it happens — except in a true emergency.
The keys are in the trunk.
That is still a lockout, with a different path on some vehicles (folding rear seats, trunk release, or lock). Mention it on the call.
