Locksmith Scams in Michigan: How to Avoid Them

The classic pattern is a very low advertised price for a lockout. Once someone is on site, the job “turns out” to need a new lock, extra labor, or a trip fee that was never mentioned. The original number was never a real quote.

A legitimate locksmith can still only estimate some jobs by phone — especially car keys, where the vehicle decides the parts. What they should not do is advertise a fantasy price and then refuse to leave until you pay many times that amount.

A lock that can be picked or decoded is often cheaper and cleaner to open than a lock that gets drilled. Scam operators drill immediately because they then get to sell you a replacement.

Ask, before anyone starts, whether they will try a non-destructive opening first. A straight answer matters more than a script.

Some operations use a city name in the business title, a number that forwards to a call center, and a map pin that is not a shop. You think you called a Taylor or Wyandotte locksmith. You reached a dispatcher who will send whoever is closest on their board.

Check the Google Business Profile: real name, real reviews over time, photos of actual work and a truck, and a phone number that matches what you are about to dial. City Locksmith Taylor LLC is a service-area business — Google does not show a street address because there is no public storefront. That is different from inventing a shop that does not exist.

Cash-only with no invoice is hard to dispute. Ask for a card option or a written total before work starts. Keep a photo of the van, the locksmith, and the invoice.

If the phone quote and the door quote are unrelated numbers, stop. You can refuse the work. You are not obligated to accept a rewritten price because someone already drove over.

A real locksmith will confirm the price, or the range and what would change it, before the work starts.

Search the legal business name, not just “locksmith near me.”

Call the number on the Google profile, not a number from a random text ad, and confirm it matches.

Ask who is coming, whether they are local, and what the job will cost or what has to be seen first.

Look at the vehicle when they arrive. A locksmith who will not identify the company on the truck is a warning.

For a vehicle, have the year, make, and model ready. For a house, a photo of the lock helps.

Photograph the lock, the invoice if you have one, the vehicle, and any card receipt. Dispute the charge with your bank if a card was used. Report the listing on Google. The Better Business Bureau and local police non-emergency line can take a report. None of that opens the door tonight — call a locksmith you can actually verify for the lock itself.
