How a residential lockout is opened
Look at the lock. A standard pin tumbler deadbolt, a key-in-knob, a keypad, and a high-security cylinder are not opened the same way.
Use the least destructive method that will actually work. Picking or decoding a healthy lock is the preferred path.
If the lock is failed, packed with wear, or a design that will not pick cleanly, drilling may be the remaining option. That is a replacement, not a “quick drill and leave.”
Storm doors, back doors, and side entries
If a back door or side entry is a simpler lock, say so on the call. The front deadbolt is not always the right door to fight.
A locked storm door in front of a locked entry is two locks. Mention both.
After you are inside
If the only key is on the kitchen counter, the lockout is done. If the keys are truly gone, this is the moment to talk about rekeying so the missing keys are no longer a problem.
Questions people actually ask
Do you need my ID to open the house?
We need a reasonable way to confirm you belong there. ID plus something that ties you to the address is the usual path. Neighbors and landlords can sometimes help verify. We will not force a lock for a stranger with no paper.
