How Much Does It Cost to Rekey a House in Michigan?

People search this because they want a number before they call. Fair. Rekeying is usually cheaper than replacing every lock, and the work is done on the door you already have.

This page explains what you are paying for and what changes the quote. It is not a current price list. Older figures that used to appear here are not approved as today’s prices. Call or text 313-888-3190 with the city and how many doors you have for a real quote.

What “rekey a house” actually includes

Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key works and the old keys do not. The lock stays on the door. You are paying for a service call (the locksmith coming to the house), the rekey work on each cylinder, and any extra keys you want cut.

A typical house is several locks: front deadbolt, front knob or lever, back door, maybe a side door or garage entry man-door. Those are separate cylinders even if you want them all on one key.

What changes the price

How many cylinders. Four locks cost more than one.

Whether the cylinders are a common residential brand we can pin on the truck, or something restricted, worn out, or mixed.

Whether you want extra keys beyond the first set.

Where the house is relative to Taylor, and whether the call is after hours.

Whether any lock is too worn to rekey and should be replaced instead. That is a different job.

When you should rekey

After you buy a house. Closing keys are not a security plan. Realtors, contractors, and the previous owner have had copies.

After a roommate, tenant, or contractor leaves with a key.

After a key is lost and you cannot say who still has a copy.

When you want the front and back door on the same key and the hardware is compatible.

Rekey vs replace

If the lock still turns smoothly and the bolt throws fully, rekey. If the lock is loose, the bolt misses the strike, or you want a stronger or smarter lock, replacement is the honest job. Those two options are compared on a separate guide.

How long it takes

A straightforward house rekey is often done in a single visit. Time depends on the number of cylinders and whether anything is seized or mixed-brand. You do not have to take the locks off the doors and bring them to a shop — this is mobile service.

How to get a quote

Tell us the city, a count of exterior doors, and whether you want them keyed alike. A photo of each lock helps. We confirm the price before work begins.

How a quote works

There is no public price menu on this site. Pricing is kept competitive with the local market. There is no public price menu and no bait number on this site. The price is confirmed with you before work begins. No surprise bill after the door is open.

What usually affects the price

  • The actual lock, key, or vehicle system — not a generic menu item
  • Whether parts have to be originated, programmed, or only duplicated
  • How many doors or keys are involved
  • Time of day — after-hours work can affect the quote
  • Travel from Taylor to your location
  • Whether the hardware is common or something we have to source

What to have ready

  • What you need done (lockout, rekey, car key, commercial hardware, etc.)
  • The city and a cross street or parking-lot name
  • For vehicles: year, make, and model, and whether any working key still exists
  • For houses and shops: how many doors, and a photo of the lock if you can send one

A service-call fee applies when we come to you. After-hours work and longer runs from Taylor can be part of the quote. Call or text 313-888-3190.

Questions

Can you make all the house locks work with one key?

On compatible cylinders, yes. That is a normal request. Mixed brands sometimes cannot share a key without replacing hardware.

Do I need the old keys?

They help. We can still rekey without them.

Why isn’t there a price on this page?

Because a honest quote depends on the locks and the visit. Published numbers that are no longer current would be worse than asking you to call.
