Broken Car Key Extraction in Taylor, Michigan

A key usually breaks because it was already worn, because the cylinder is tight, or because someone used it as a pry bar. The half in your hand is the easy part. The half in the lock is the job.

We extract broken keys from ignitions and vehicle door locks when the wafer stack will still allow it, then replace the key — and the cylinder if the wafers are too far gone.

Leave the broken piece in the lock

It is tempting to pick at it. That usually drives the stub deeper or mushrooms the brass. If the key still sticks out, leave it. If it is flush, leave it. Take a photo and call.

After extraction

We check why it broke. A new key in a dying cylinder will break again. If the ignition is packed with wear, the honest repair is the cylinder, not another copy of a tired blade.

Questions people actually ask

Can a broken transponder key still be copied?

The blade can often be originated even if the head is snapped. The chip is in the head — if that half is gone and it was your only key, you may be in all-keys-lost programming territory as well as extraction.
