- Problem
- An employee or contractor still has a key. Owner wants the old keys dead the same day if the hardware allows it.
- Diagnosis
- Look at the cylinder, the cam, and the latch as a set. Rekeying a cylinder with the wrong cam still leaves a door that “turns” and does not lock. A pair of doors needs both leaves checked, including flushbolts.
- Work
- Rekey the cylinder or replace it if the keyway is a dead end.
- Confirm the cam and latch actually throw.
- Issue a key count the owner can track. Do not cut a dozen “just in case.”
- Result
- Old keys retired. Door locks. Owner knows how many new keys exist.
