Adding a transponder key on site

Educational process note — how this type of job is typically approached. It is not a write-up of a specific completed job.

Typical setting
Allen Park, Michigan
Vehicle or door
Domestic or common import with a transponder key and one working original

Problem
One working key. No spare. The remaining key is worn. Owner wants a second programmed key before the original breaks.
Diagnosis
Add-a-key is a different programming path than all keys lost. The module already trusts a transponder. The worn original should not be the only source of the bitting if it is thin — originating from code is cleaner than copying a banana blade.
Work
  1. Read the vehicle and the remaining key.
  2. Cut a correct blade. Program the new transponder into the module.
  3. Test both keys. Tell the owner the original is on borrowed time if it is already worn.
Result
A second working key in the driveway, and a warning if the original should be retired instead of kept as the “good one.”
